Iceland is known for great contrasts. In Iceland we have great volcanic areas, big glaciers, big mountains and deep valleys. You can not drive for long until there is a big mountain in your way or a glacier. The 5 biggest mountains in Iceland are the following;
1. Hvannadalshnúkur
The highest peak on Icelands is the peak of Hvannadalshnúkur. Hvannadalshnúkur is located on the north-western rim of the summit crater of the glacier Öræfajökull. At the peak it is 2.110 meters high
2. Bárðabunga
Bárðabunga is located on the north-vestern part of the glacier Vatnajökull. The peak of Bárðabunga is the second highest peak on Iceland and it is almost 2.000 meters high
3. Kverkfjöll
On the north part of the glacier Vatnajökull we have Kverfjöll. Where the Kverkfjöll are highest the altitude is 1.920 meters.
4. Snæfell
The highest mountain that stands individually in Iceland is Snæfell. Snæfell is located on the north-east side of the glacier Vatnajökull and the height of the mountain is around 1.833 meters
5. Glacier Hofsjökull
Hofsjökull is a glacier located on the middle of the Icelandic highlands. The highest peak on Hofsjökull is around 1.760 meters high.
