When Arctic Trucks builds a 6×6 Hilux, almost all parts of the vehicle are removed. First the body is removed, then the engine and transmission and then the whole suspension system. More than 2/3 of the original chassis rails are removed and much stronger rear section are welded to the remaining front part.
In order to transfer the engine power to all six wheels, a second specially made axle housing is fitted. This axle housing contains a lockable transfer case that delivers 60/40 torque split between the two rear axles. To make sure that the 6×6 Hilux keeps going when things get really though, all 3 axles are fitted with lockable differentials. This means that all the six wheels can get full power at the same time.
The 6×6 Hilux gets a new 4-link type suspension system on both rear axles, heavy duty coil springs and high performance shock absorbers.
But don’t think the front is kept original. The original front section of the chassis and almost all parts of the front suspension and steering system is reinforced. And to make sure that the front can also handle the rough terrain new heavy duty coil springs and high performance shock absorbers are also fitted.
Driving a 6×6 Hilux in hard off-road conditions compare to a 4×4 Hilux is a blast. The 6×6 has more traction and more flotation, which means it can drive more easily on soft terrain such as snow and sand, while carrying much more load. The added axle will also help the ride on rough terrain, more wheels means less pitch which means more comfort for the passengers.
