All traffic in the area north of Vatnajökull glacier is still prohibited. The Police patrols the area in cooperation with the Coast Guard. During regular patrol today, vehicles were seen inside the prohibited area. All those in the cars will be charged with violations of the police act and can expect heavy fines.
The reason for this is danger related to eruptions, such as flash glacial flooding, poisonous gasses, flowing lava and hot lava-stones.
We let you know as soon as the area opens to traffic and we can take the Arctic Trucks up to the eruption site. Until then we can drive on the glacier with great views ofer the eruption. According to the volcanoist Ármann Höskuldsson there could be activity here for a few years. Not this particular eruption, it will end and another one will start up elsewhere, and this will clearly erupt in a glacier!
Scientists estimate that the longest lava stream from the fissure has reached 7 kilometers in length and is heading north by north-east, towards the source of Jökulsá.
