Iceland is known for a lot of beautiful geographic phenomenons. One of which is located about 30 kilometers from Reykjavík. Raufarhólshellir is a beautiful Lava tube and it is a great way to spend your time in Iceland!
The creation af lava tubes takes place during a volcanic eruption. Most of the time they form when the surface flow cools sufficiently until it is harden while the interior does not and is still moving under the hard surface, resulting in a tube shaped lava cave that can span for kilometers!
Raufarhólshellir is believed to have been created in a fissure around the year 1000. The cave is approximetly 1360 meters long, 10-30 meters wide and up to 10 meters high. The roof is at avarage around 12 meters thick. Raufarhólshellir is also an Ice-cave, but there is some amount of ice and water in the cave all year long. With the right equipment you can see most of thist underground pearl.
The lava tube is really beautiful these days and a visit to the geographic phenomeno is a great way to spend your day! It is close to Reykjavík and gives you a chance to see something that you have probebly not seen often in your life! But the caves floor can be icy and hard to walk on so caution is important while exploring the cave!
