Easter is one of the best times to spend times in Iceland. The holiday gives you the best of the Icelandic winter, bright days, crisp nights and the possibility of seeing the fantastic Northern Lights. It is also a shoulder season, which means there will not be as many tourists as in the height of summer.
What makes Easter unique in Iceland?
Our Easter holidays cover 5 days (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday). Due to the long weekend people get, it makes it a popular time to travel and why not do like the locals and spend Easter in Iceland?
Also, as it is a spring festival, you will get the best of the Icelandic winter. It is getting increasingly brighter and warmer. And yes, despite it being a spring festival, it is still winter in Iceland, albeit the very end of it.
Depending on the weather, you might even catch the end of the Northern Lights season! The Northern Lights are a spectacular light show created by solar particles hitting the Earth’s atmosphere. It is a sight one should not miss, if possible.
Arctic Trucks Experience Tours
Taking a tour with Arctic Trucks during the Easter holiday is a great way to spend your time in Iceland. Although the nights still being cold, the average temperature is up to 5° C higher than during the darkest months. The days have also become considerably brighter, with up to 15 hours of daylight!
But that does not mean it is dark outside of those hours, the Icelandic twilight is known for being extra-long so it can be bright for up to an hour before the sun comes up and after the sunsets!
How is Easter in Iceland?
Like Christmas, Easter is a family holiday in Iceland. Children get a chocolate Easter egg, filled with candy on Easter Sunday and everyone comes together that evening to eat lamb.
For the longest time, everything was closed on Good Friday, but in recent years more and more restaurants will be open. However, you will not find many shops open on that day, Easter Sunday or even Easter Monday.
Happy Easter!
