Iceland offers a great variety of spectacular things to see! Beautiful nature, glaciers and volcanoes are just few of the interesting things to see when travelling in Iceland. Here is a list of 5 really great places to visit in Iceland and some of Arctic Trucks Experiences favorites!
- Lake Mývatn in the north
Lake Mývatn is located east of Akureyri, the capital of the north. Lake Mývatn is Icelands‘s forth largest lake. It is believed that Mývatn was formed in catastrophic eruption about 2300 years ago. Close to Mývatn there is a volcano called Krafla and is the area still very active!
- The canyon Ásbyrgi
Ásbyrgi is a horse-shoe shaped caynon in the northeast of Iceland. The canyon is about 3.5 km in lenght and around 1 km across. Surrounding the canyon is a cliff structure where people can enjoy a breathtaking view over the beautiful scenery!
- Þingvellir national park
In the southwest of Iceland we have the national park called Þingvellir. Þingvellir is a part of the golden circle and is famous for its importance in Icelandic history and amazing scenery. Þingvellir has also geological importances as it is a site of a rift valley that marks the crest of the mid-Atlantic ridge. Lake Þingvallavatn is located in Þingvellir and is the biggest natural lake in Iceland.
- Seljavallalaug pool
Located in the south we have Seljavallalaug, one of Iceland‘s oldest outdoor pool. The pool is built into a hillside at the roots of a mountain, harnessing the warm water that gushes from the mountain. The water in the pool is natural hot water, heated by the geothermal activety in the area.
- The volcano Hekla
In the south, mount Hekla towers 1.5 km into the sky. Hekla is an active volcano and is one of Iceland‘s most active volcanic area. It has erupted often with evidence leading to the first eruption in the year 1104 and is due for another eruption! The volcano has been an insperation for many storytellers throughout time and back in the days, people believed it to be the gateway to hell!
